Five Night Kitchen

Family prep workbooks

Keep cold finishes separate from the week’s prepared bases

Give dressings, crisp vegetables, sesame toppings, bread and fresh rice their own dinner-day jobs. Prepare only the two supported hot bases ahead and freeze them promptly for Thursday and Friday.

This worked example starts 2026-10-26 and makes 2 cooking servings at each dinner. Its stock and package sizes are examples. Enter your own quantities, dates, labels and equipment before using the plan.

Carry out the task

  1. Check the complete five-dinner list, actual package instructions and usable dates. Label the Thursday soup and Friday curry bases separately.
  2. On Sunday, prepare only the selected soup and curry components. Record original finish times, start prompt shallow-container cooling, and freeze promptly for their later dinners.
  3. On Monday, cook, rinse and drain the soba and edamame; cut vegetables and add the separate dressing and sesame at service.
  4. On Tuesday and Wednesday, prepare the intended cold filling and keep each recipe’s crisp vegetables, toppings and bread or tortillas for its finishing steps.
  5. Record each actual refrigerator move for the frozen bases, keep the earlier applicable limit, and reheat only the hot bases evenly to 74°C.
  6. Toast bread for Thursday and cook rice for Friday at service time. Record unused ingredients under their original package limits.

Assign every component a separate job

This two-serving menu starts with Soba and edamame cold salad on Monday, Cucumber chickpea chopped salad on Tuesday and Sesame chickpea slaw wraps on Wednesday. Thursday is Roast pepper and white bean soup, followed by Coconut chickpea and cauliflower curry on Friday. Only the Thursday soup and Friday curry bases are selected for Sunday preparation. Their planned freezer path keeps the later dinners separate from the cold, fresh jobs at the start of the week.

A component is an actual ingredient subset. The soup base includes the roast peppers, onion, beans, tomatoes, garlic, paprika, oil, seasoning and recipe water; its 160g bread stays out. The curry base includes cauliflower, chickpeas, coconut milk, onion, ginger, garlic, oil and seasoning; its 150g dry rice and 300ml recipe water stay for Friday. Cooking these bases ahead creates no prepared dressing, salad vegetables, bread or rice. Use separate clean containers and labels for any parts you actually store.

Finish the three cold dinners on their own days

On Monday, follow the soba recipe to cook and rinse 160g noodles and 200g edamame with cold drinking water, then drain well. Cut 200g cucumber and 100g carrot, whisk 20ml soy sauce, 20ml lemon and 10ml oil, and add the 10g sesame topping at service. The supported make-ahead component contains only soba and edamame, with a 24-hour refrigerated product window. It is not selected here; Monday’s complete salad is made for that dinner.

On Tuesday, the lemon chickpea component contains chickpeas, onion, lemon, oil, salt and pepper; cucumber, tomato and toasted bread remain finishing ingredients. On Wednesday, the tahini chickpea filling contains chickpeas, tahini, lemon, salt and pepper; shredded cabbage, carrot, sesame and tortillas remain outside it. Both assembled fillings have 48-hour maximum refrigerated component windows in this planner and are not selected for Sunday preparation here. Follow any earlier ingredient limit. Make the dressings and cut vegetables for the intended dinner, then combine just before serving.

Store hot bases without changing cold instructions

For Sunday’s soup and curry, record original cooking finishes, divide into shallow containers and begin cooling promptly. Refrigerate or freeze within two hours, or within one hour above 32°C; do not wait for a large pan to become cold on the counter. Freeze these supported later-week bases promptly on preparation day. Keep the freezer at −18°C or below and the refrigerator at 4°C or below. Their 72-hour refrigerated planning maximum is a conservative product rule, and Sunday-to-Thursday or Friday storage needs the freezer path.

Move each frozen base to the refrigerator for its own dinner and record the actual move. The planner’s maximum 24-hour actual-thaw window and any earlier product limit remain attached to that portion. Reheat the soup or curry throughout to 74°C with a food thermometer. Toast Thursday’s bread separately and cook Friday’s rice fresh. The cold salad dressings and ready-to-eat finishes have their own handling instructions; they do not acquire a 74°C reheating step from a neighbouring hot component.

Keep quantities and package dates attached to the right food

The complete week needs 780g drained chickpeas: 300g for Tuesday’s salad, 240g for Wednesday’s slaw and 240g in Friday’s curry base. The illustrative 200g pantry entry represents weighed, usable drained chickpeas. Actual opened-can dates and after-opening instructions still need checking before choosing when that stock can be used. The shopping balance only subtracts compatible stock; it cannot verify the contents of your refrigerator. Example can sizes use drained edible weight, not gross weight including liquid.

Keep projected package surplus separate from a finished dish. The 140g chickpea surplus in this example has no assigned new shelf life. Likewise, a partly used tahini jar, cut cucumber or bread follows its own original package and handling limits. Use the record sheet to name what remains to be cut, mixed or toasted on each day, and enter actual actions only when they happen. These original recipes have not been human kitchen-tested; clean separation and measured quantities support execution without promising a particular texture after storage.

Check the worked quantity

The whole week requires 300 + 240 + 240 = 780g drained chickpeas. The illustrative usable pantry contributes 200g, leaving 580g net. Three example 240g-drained cans provide 720g, with 140g projected surplus. Check the actual can’s drained weight and keep opened-product limits with any remainder.
