Shop once for rice and cook it on each dinner day
Allocate dry rice across five two-serving dinners, then cook each dated amount fresh. Keep packet water ratios, unexpected leftovers and any actual cooling record separate from the shopping balance.
This worked example starts 2026-10-26 and makes 2 cooking servings at each dinner. Its stock and package sizes are examples. Enter your own quantities, dates, labels and equipment before using the plan.
Carry out the task
- Check usable dry rice and the packet instructions. Keep cooked rice out of the dry-stock entry.
- Reserve five dated allocations of 160g dry rice. Use the whole-week shopping list for all beans, vegetables, liquids and seasonings.
- On Monday and Tuesday, cook the rice separately and coordinate the topping with the available burners.
- On Wednesday through Friday, use each one-pot recipe in its stated order; record the packet ratio and any processing-water addition.
- Serve each dinner promptly. For unexpected leftovers, record actual finish and refrigerator times and follow the shorter cooked-rice window.
- If a dinner changes, retain its uncooked allocation or rebuild the full plan; keep every existing cooked batch’s original timestamps and earlier limits.
Make five dry allocations before cooking any rice
The week runs from Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30: Lemon chickpea rice, Bean rice bowls, Lemon pea rice pot, Broccoli and black bean rice, then Carrot and white bean rice. Each dinner needs 160g dry rice for two recipe servings. The whole week therefore needs 800g dry rice. This workbook selects no make-ahead components: vegetables, toppings and rice are cooked on their own dinner days. A combined grocery purchase does not mean a combined cooked batch.
Check the edible, usable dry stock and keep it in its appropriate dry storage. The illustrative pantry contains 300g, so one example 500g packet supplies the remaining requirement exactly. You may mark five 160g allocations on the record sheet without opening or physically dividing every packet. If you weigh portions into containers, use clean, dry containers and retain the original product information. Water absorbed during cooking is never entered as additional dry-rice inventory.
Use the right cooking sequence on each day
Monday’s rice cooks separately while the chickpea and vegetable topping is prepared; add the 20ml lemon juice to the topping at the finish. Tuesday also has a separate rice saucepan and a pepper, tomato and black bean skillet. Each lists 300ml recipe water for the rice before any packet adjustment. Check the actual rice instructions and record a changed ratio. With two burners the jobs can overlap; with one, follow the recipe sequence and allow extra time.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday cook rice inside their own pots. Wednesday adds peas near the end and lemon after cooking. Thursday steams broccoli over the rice before folding in black beans and adding lemon at the finish. Friday softens carrot and onion before cooking the rice and adding white beans. Each starts with 350ml recipe water. These ingredient combinations affect the pot: cook until the grain is tender, use the recipe’s small water adjustments when necessary, and record the actual addition.
Keep daily service separate from stored leftovers
Set a realistic dinner start and cook that day’s allocation close to service. Follow the covered simmer and resting steps rather than multiplying a cooking time by the number of future dinners. The four-litre setting gives one planned batch for each two-serving recipe here. If your actual pan cannot handle the food safely, split the ingredients proportionally and track each batch. Recipe timings are planning estimates; these original recipes have not been human kitchen-tested.
Serve promptly. If an unexpected cooked portion remains, begin cooling promptly in shallow containers and refrigerate promptly within two hours, or one hour above 32°C. Record the original finish time and the actual fridge entry; do not replace them with tomorrow’s intended dinner time. For cooked rice, this planner uses at most 24 refrigerated hours from original preparation, or an earlier applicable ingredient limit. That short window is a conservative product choice and is not presented as a USDA-specific rice rule.
Change a dinner without stretching a rice batch
A cancelled Thursday dinner leaves a dry 160g allocation available until you actually cook it. Update the full planner if you replace or cancel a recipe so the complete vegetable, bean and seasoning list changes as well. Already cooked rice follows its original storage history. This worksheet deliberately avoids a Sunday rice batch held in the refrigerator through Friday. For an intentional longer-ahead plan, use a supported promptly frozen component and its actual records rather than turning all five daily allocations into one chilled pot.
Frozen storage must begin promptly while food is still usable. When moving a frozen portion to the refrigerator, record the actual move and retain any earlier declared limit; this planner’s maximum 24-hour actual-thaw window is another conservative product rule. Reheat cooked leftovers evenly to 74°C, checking with a food thermometer. Neither reheating nor moving the meal date restarts a storage clock. The five rows below are a daily cooking and exception log, with no completed handling implied by the example dates.
Check the worked quantity
Five dinners × 160g dry rice = 800g required. The illustrative 300g usable dry pantry leaves 500g net. One example 500g packet supplies it, leaving no projected dry surplus. The daily cooking record accounts for those same grams and does not add a second pantry deduction.
| Ingredient | Needed | Example stock used | Net to find or buy | Example purchase | Unassigned balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice | 800g | 300g | 500g | 500g | 0g |
Need and stock must use the same food state: dry. A cooked weight, can’s gross weight or finished sauce is not a second raw-stock credit. Purchase sizes are editable examples and do not show shop availability or price.
Keep a task record
The supplied rows are examples or fields to complete. They do not confirm an actual label check, food temperature, preparation time or household handoff.
