Five Night Kitchen

Family prep workbooks

Portion a four-serving cook and record prompt cooling

Prepare Monday’s carrot lentil base, divide the actual cooked output into shallow portions, and keep the original finish time beside each actual refrigerator entry. The remaining four dinners have their own cooking days.

This worked example starts 2026-10-26 and makes 4 cooking servings at each dinner. Its stock and package sizes are examples. Enter your own quantities, dates, labels and equipment before using the plan.

Carry out the task

  1. Check the actual fridge temperature, clear space, and label four shallow serving containers; add containers if the actual output needs more room.
  2. Cook only the selected carrot lentil base for Monday, leaving the 200g spinach for the dinner finish. Follow the scaled recipe and its doneness checks.
  3. Record the real finish time for each cooking pan. Weigh cooked output Y if available, and divide the mixed base into four equal servings.
  4. Start cooling promptly in shallow containers and refrigerate promptly within the applicable two-hour or hot-weather one-hour limit. Enter each actual refrigerator time.
  5. Keep the original preparation time and any earlier ingredient limit on every portion. Make any necessary freezer decision while the food is still usable on preparation day.
  6. On Monday, check the recorded history, reheat the base throughout to 74°C, add the fresh spinach, and record the servings used.

Set out the containers before the pan is ready

This five-dinner plan serves four on October 26–30. Monday is Carrot and lentil pot; Tuesday is Tomato lentil rice pot; Wednesday is Lentil cabbage soup; Thursday is Lemon bean wraps; Friday is Lentil tomato soup with bread. Only Monday’s carrot lentil base is selected for advance preparation on Sunday, October 25. Tuesday through Friday remain fresh cooking jobs. The four portions in this workbook belong to one dinner, rather than four different nights.

Before cooking, make room in a refrigerator checked at 4°C or below and set out four clean, shallow, food-safe containers. Choose enough surface area for the actual food; use additional shallow containers if the output would make these four deep or crowded. Check that the containers are suitable for warm food. A nominal container capacity, the material, or a photograph cannot establish a cooling time. Keep the refrigerator sufficiently uncrowded for cold air to circulate.

Cook the base and keep the fresh finish separate

For this four-serving base, the scaled recipe uses 320g dry red lentils, 600g edible carrots, 200g onions, 30ml oil, 4g cumin, 6g salt, 2g pepper and 1,400ml recipe water. Follow the component method until the carrots yield to a fork and the lentils are creamy. Record any extra processing water. The 200g spinach belongs to Monday’s finishing step and stays out of the stored base. Keep its own package and usable-date information.

The six-litre pot setting gives Monday one planned cooking batch. Other dinners in this week can require two capacity batches; read their displayed cards separately. If you divide any cook between pans, record a finish time for each pan instead of assigning the later pan’s time to everything. Cooking estimates help arrange work, while texture checks decide when the base is ready. These original recipes have not been validated by human kitchen trials.

Measure output without inventing a cooling result

When the base finishes, write the actual date and time immediately. If a scale is available, weigh the cooked food without the pan and call the result Y. Stir to distribute solids and liquid, then divide into four equal Y/4 servings. Record actual filled weights if useful. Evaporation and added water change Y, so neither the raw ingredient total nor an assumed cooked yield can replace this measurement. Extra containers can hold parts of the same labelled serving.

Begin cooling promptly in shallow containers and refrigerate promptly; do not leave the full pot on the counter waiting to become cold. Perishable food should be refrigerated or frozen within two hours, or within one hour when the surroundings exceed 32°C. Those limits are outside limits, not waiting targets. Enter each actual refrigerator time. That entry records a storage action; it does not prove that the centre reached a particular temperature or that every container cooled at the same rate.

Finish Monday without restarting the original clock

Label each container with the recipe component, original finish time, serving number and intended Monday dinner. The planner’s maximum 72 refrigerated hours for this cooked base is a conservative product rule; an earlier ingredient or declared product limit still applies. If Monday changes to a later day, compare the new dinner with the original preparation time. Freeze promptly on preparation day when a later use requires it, or cook fresh. Freezing an overdue refrigerated base cannot repair its history.

On Monday, reheat the labelled base evenly to 74°C, checking several places with a food thermometer, then add the washed spinach and complete the recipe. Keep the record sheet with the batch until it is used. Blank times mean an action has not been recorded. If the actual handling history falls outside safe limits, use a fresh meal rather than filling in an estimated time. The shopping list remains a raw-ingredient account: portion weights and cooling records create no additional pantry stock.

Check the worked quantity

The complete four-serving week needs 1,200g dry red lentils: 320g Monday, 240g Tuesday, 320g Wednesday and 320g Friday. The illustrative confirmed pantry has 300g usable dry lentils. Subtract it once: 900g net, rounded to two example 500g packs. The projected 100g remainder is dry stock, not cooked base.

Need and stock must use the same food state: dry. A cooked weight, can’s gross weight or finished sauce is not a second raw-stock credit. Purchase sizes are editable examples and do not show shop availability or price.
