Divide four-serving dinners into complete loads for a 2L pot
Keep all four servings and every ingredient while adapting a five-dinner menu to a 2L pot. Use four equal one-serving loads for practical measurements, and record actual cooking checks for each load.
This worked example starts 2026-10-26 and makes 4 cooking servings at each dinner. Its stock and package sizes are examples. Enter your own quantities, dates, labels and equipment before using the plan.
Carry out the task
- Keep four servings selected, set a 2L pot and read the planner’s estimated minimum batch counts alongside the actual cookware instructions.
- Choose the workbook’s four equal one-serving loads; check that every table row adds back to its four-serving total.
- Measure the whole dinner, then divide every ingredient into four labelled kits, keeping later additions and cold components separate.
- Check actual fill below 1.6L and any stricter vessel limit before heating; split a complete load further if needed without changing the total ingredients.
- Cook each kit through the full recipe sequence, separating pasta processing water from recipe water and checking packet instructions and doneness each time.
- Record any processing-water adjustments and actual finish times, serve promptly, and use appropriate chilling and reheating for actual leftovers.
- Reconcile all four completed load allocations and keep the full four-serving shopping list unchanged.
Keep servings and vessel capacity separate
The household still receives four recipe servings each night. Set servings to four and pot capacity to 2L; lowering servings would shrink the shopping list and remove food from dinner. For this menu the planner estimates minimum batch counts of three for chickpea couscous, two for bean rice bowls, three for spinach and white bean pasta, two for lemon bean wraps, and three for carrot and lentil pot. These are capacity estimates rather than measurements of your actual vessel.
This workbook chooses four equal one-serving loads for every dinner, which meets or exceeds those estimated counts and makes the allocations straightforward. Each load gets one-quarter of every ingredient in that dinner. The table includes all recipe water, oil, salt, pepper and finishing ingredients; each row’s four loads add back to its unchanged four-serving total. Keep the pot below the planner’s 80% fill limit, 1.6L in a 2L vessel, and follow any more restrictive vessel instruction.
Prepare complete load kits
Before heating, weigh four labelled sets from that evening’s ingredients. Keep ingredients separate within a set when they enter at different stages. Monday’s set contains 80g dry couscous, 120g drained chickpeas, 150g zucchini, 75g carrots, 50g onion, 10ml oil, 10ml lemon juice, 1.5g salt, 0.5g pepper and 100ml recipe water. Repeat the same complete set four times; do not put the entire dinner’s vegetables into the first load.
Use a scale suitable for the small seasoning quantities or choose cookware and a load division you can measure accurately, then recalculate the whole allocation. Preserve the recipe’s cut sizes. If the actual food still crowds your vessel, split a complete load further in the same proportions before cooking; account for both subloads. A litre capacity does not guarantee enough surface area for browning. Use a suitable skillet when the recipe calls for one, with the same ingredient allocation.
Handle rice and pasta as separate cooking stages
Tuesday’s one-serving kit has 80g dry rice and 150ml recipe water, plus its separate bean-and-vegetable topping ingredients. Follow the full recipe’s saucepan and skillet sequence; with one burner it finishes the topping first and allows additional time. The stove setting and the packet’s rice ratio still need checking. Keep each cooked kit associated with its matching topping rather than counting a pot of rice as an additional serving.
Wednesday’s kit has 80g dry pasta, 120g drained white beans, 100g spinach, 50g onion, 10ml lemon juice, 7.5ml oil, 1.5g salt, 0.5g pepper and 50ml recipe water. The pasta boiling water is separate processing water. The full recipe’s approximately 2L per two servings becomes approximately 1L per one-serving pasta load; include the pasta itself when checking actual fill. Transfer the bean base as instructed, boil and drain pasta, then combine that load. Do not put the four-serving 4L processing-water allowance into the 2L pot.
Finish wraps and lentils without losing ingredients
Thursday’s one-serving load includes two tortillas, 120g drained white beans, 100g cabbage, 75g carrots, 10ml lemon juice, 5ml oil, 1.5g salt and 0.5g pepper. Divide the bean filling for heating but keep the raw vegetables separate until assembly. Warm each load’s tortillas as directed. A load count is not permission to discard the cold filling or allocate all eight tortillas to the first two portions.
Friday’s load has 80g dry lentils, 150g carrots, 50g onion, 50g spinach, 1g cumin, 7.5ml oil, 1.5g salt, 0.5g pepper and 350ml recipe water. Soften vegetables, briefly stir in cumin, simmer lentils until creamy and add spinach near the end. Record any extra processing water per load. Actual evaporation can vary with pot shape, so preserve the initial recipe ratio and adjust using the recipe’s doneness instructions.
Serve and record by actual load
Allow time for repeated heating, draining, resting and cleaning. Four loads do not establish four times a displayed recipe duration, and a smaller load does not guarantee a shorter cooking time. Check the food in each load: tender carrots and lentils, cooked grains, steaming beans and the recipe’s intended texture. Record finish times rather than assuming later loads finish together. Serve completed portions promptly; if you need everyone served together, arrange suitable cookware and a safe holding plan before starting.
Keep raw garnish and cold components separate from cooked loads. If cooked food becomes leftovers, portion it into shallow containers and chill promptly within the applicable limit; keep the original preparation history. Reheated cooked leftovers require 74°C throughout, checked with a food thermometer. The shopping list remains the complete four-serving week, including 320g dry rice and 320g dry pasta. Extra vessels or repeated loads change execution, not those ingredient totals.
Check the worked quantity
Four-serving whole-week shopping row remains 320g dry rice, with no pantry credit. One example 500g bag supplies 320g and leaves 180g. Tuesday’s four loads each use 80g; 4 × 80 = 320g. Pot capacity never reduces the ingredient requirement.
| Ingredient | Needed | Example stock used | Net to find or buy | Example purchase | Unassigned balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice | 320g | 0g | 320g | 500g | 180g |
Need and stock must use the same food state: dry. A cooked weight, can’s gross weight or finished sauce is not a second raw-stock credit. Purchase sizes are editable examples and do not show shop availability or price.
